Vulnerabilities of later planted crops

A marketing lead for Syngenta is concerned about the vulnerability of later planted corn and soybeans.

“They seem more prone for disease and insects, and we’ve started to see some of that come on.”

Charlie Fitzgerald tells Brownfield growers need to be scouting fields and working with their local ag retailer to be on top of any issues that emerge.

“Those prime culprits are what you can see now with some of these conditions that we’re moving into, whether it’s northern corn leaf blight, gray leaf spot. You work over into the eastern Corn Belt and tar spot is a disease that’s starting to creep in.”

For pests, he says corn borer is a problem where resistant traits weren’t used.  In soybeans, there’s been increasing gall midge pressure in Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota and Minnesota.  Fitzgerald also recommends watching for soybean aphids.
