Wisconsin crops good after hot and dry week
A mostly-dry week allowed Wisconsin farmers to get a lot of fieldwork accomplished. USDA reporters say there were six days suitable for getting into fields, but it was hot and many said they could use some rain.
Ninety-five percent of the corn has emerged with 78% of the crop reported to be in good to excellent condition.
Ninety-three percent of the soybeans have emerged, and 77% of the beans are in good to excellent condition, down 4% from a week ago.
Ninety-one percent of the potato crop is good to excellent.
Winter wheat is 89% headed and 28% of the wheat is coloring.
Most farmers have wrapped up first crop alfalfa, with 93% of it harvested. There are scattered reports of some Wisconsin farmers getting started on second crop hay. Even with the hot and mostly-dry week, 82% of Wisconsin’s hay is in good to excellent condition.
