Wisconsin industrial hemp bill on legislative fast track

Wisconsin Capitol at night

The Wisconsin bill allowing commercial hemp production on the fast track.

The State Senate Ag Committee passed the bill last week, and for a short time Friday, it was referred to the Joint Committee on Finance, but that committee sent it straight to the full Senate, which unanimously passed it on a voice vote Tuesday.

The Assembly Ag Committee has a hearing on the bill Wednesday morning at 9:30 in the Capitol, and could schedule a vote on the floor as early as Thursday.

Industrial hemp fiber is used for textiles, rope, paper and building products. Hemp seed is used for food, feed, and oil.  The hemp oil is used for pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, inks, lubrication, and paints.  The plant hasn’t been commercially grown in Wisconsin since 1970 when changes to the 1937 Marijuana Tax Act made all plants in the cannabis family illegal to grow.
