World Beef Expo show attracts niche breeds

One of the show superintendents for World Beef Expo says they’re doing something different that is bringing in more show cattle every year.

Joe Scott is one of many volunteers that help manage the many classes of cattle shows at World Beef Expo.  He tells Brownfield World Beef Expo draws many of the unconventional beef cattle breeds.  “Your Scottish Highlanders, a lot of shows don’t have Belted Galloways, British White Parks, Mini Herefords.  We have all of those unconventional breeds, and it also gives them a chance to exhibit.  That’s part of what we pride ourselves in at World Beef Expo.  We’re not just another regional show that way.”

He says there’s a stronghold of small producers with these niche breeds.  “People either retire, or they get a farm that used to be dairy or something like that and they find one of those niche breeds to start out with.  They’re not necessarily cattlemen before, and then they help bring in their counterparts in their breed from all of the other states.”

More than 600 animals were shown, and many of them sold during this 26th annual expo.
