Ending the year on a high note

Ellie Sennett exhibits the Grand Champion Heifer at the 2013 Indiana State Fair.Cattle were the highlight of yesterday’s junior shows at the Indiana State Fair yesterday.  Ellie Sennett’s commercial heifer was Grand Champion.

One of the highlights for the 14-year-old from Waynetown, Indiana was being able to go out on top.  “She’s done really well,” Sennett says.  “She’s a many time grand champion.  This is her last show – we would go to Louisville but she’ll be calving during that time – I was really excited because she won her last show.”

Teegan Brumbaugh's Charolais steer is named Grand Champion at the Indiana State Fair.For 18-year-old Teegan Brumbaugh of Albion, Indiana showing the Grand Champion Steer was the highlight of his 4-H career.  “It was a lifetime goal,” he says.  “My family has tried and tried and we finally got it.  It was awesome.”

And in the ring, Teegan and his steer even have their own way to communicate.  “I was talking to him to keep his ears up and keep him alert,” he says.  “So he wouldn’t pay attention to anyone but me and that way he was calm.”

Brumbaugh’s future plans include majoring in agriculture at Purdue University.
