State Legislature
Taking a stand for agriculture
State Senator Carlin Yoder says the agriculture industry is in a pretty good place in Indiana. But as he looks ahead, he thinks there are some issues that will continue to plague the industry.
One of those is push-back from activist groups on legislative issues like his Right to Farm. “You know – I got beaten up on the floor over it by some Democrats who adamantly opposed the idea,” he says. “In committee we had environmental groups who used it as a platform to really rip on agriculture.”
Yoder tells Brownfield he feels Indiana is still “on the right side of things” but adds it’s important to continue to support agriculture. Especially as the attacks on agriculture continue. “We have to be vigilant,” he says. “We can’t just assume that a great state by Indiana, that I think is a common sense state, will always remain that way. We need to continue to put into our legislature people who understand agriculture and understand agricultural practices – not only from a financial standpoint but from a food standpoint for our Hoosiers.”
Yoder serves as Indiana’s Senate Ag Committee Chair.
