Early this week, a strong cold front sweeping across the Plains and Midwest will generate rain and snow showers, trailed by a reinforcing surge of cold air. In the front’s wake, frost and freezes may occur into western Texas and as far southeast as the Ohio Valley, while temperatures could fall to 20° or below across the central High Plains. Elsewhere, warmth will prevail across the Pacific Coast States and the Desert Southwest, while little or no precipitation will fall west of the Rockies. Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for the likelihood of below-normal temperatures in much of the central and eastern U.S., while warmer-than-normal weather will be confined to Florida’s peninsula and the Far West. Meanwhile, near- or below-normal precipitation across most of the country should contrast with wetter-than-normal conditions in the South.
