Fieldwork delays in the southern Corn Belt

Across the Corn Belt, fieldwork remains at a standstill across the southern tier of the region due to ongoing heavy rainfall. In contrast, cool, dry weather covers the northern two-thirds of the Corn Belt. Widespread frost was noted Friday morning as far south and east as Wisconsin, northern Iowa, and northwestern Illinois.

On the Plains, late-season warmth lingers across Texas (excluding the northern panhandle) and southeastern Oklahoma. Warmth is also overspreading the northern High Plains. Meanwhile, a band of locally heavy rain stretches across the central Plains, disrupting fieldwork but boosting soil moisture for emerging winter wheat.

In the South, warm, dry conditions in most areas favor harvest activities and other autumn fieldwork. However, rain is edging across northern and western sections of the region. The developing rain across the interior Southeast is halting fieldwork but providing beneficial moisture for pastures and newly planted winter grains.

In the West, showers are subsiding across the central and southern Rockies. Elsewhere, dry weather accompanies unusual warmth. Topsoil moisture for Northwestern winter grains is highly variable, ranging on the 5th from 73% adequate in Idaho to more than half very short to short in Oregon (64%) and Washington (55%).
