Farmer ‘free trade’ group pushes for quick NAFTA conclusion

Brian Kuehl, executive director of Farmers for Free Trade

The organization called Farmers for Free Trade is pushing for a quick conclusion to the NAFTA re-negotiations.

Executive director Brian Kuehl says he’s cautiously optimistic that agreement on a revised NAFTA can be reached. But he says the big question is when.

“We’d like to see it wrapped up in the next month. We’d like to see it happen before the Mexican elections, which are coming up in a couple of months,” Kuehl says. “We’re nervous that it could drag into 2019.”

Kuehl says the longer NAFTA talks continue, the worse it could be for U.S. agriculture.

“Every day that passes, that’s one more opportunity for Mexico to start replacing, for example, our corn sales or other products with sales from Brazil or sales from Argentina. It’s important that we lock in this deal and lock in our position.”

Kuehl spoke with Brownfield at a University of Nebraska trade symposium.
